In this column I'll be talking about technology issues that face managers and team leaders. Don't worry, it will not be like reading a technical manual. I will use real-life examples from my more than 30 years of industry experience to highlight issues that concern you.

I like to include pointers to books on the topics being discussed as well as web sites that can be of use. In this way I hope to provide not just a thought-provoking article, but some useful tools for you to follow-up with. Note that some links may provide commissions.

My ultimate goal is to make your life as a manager or team leader a bit easier. At different times in my career I have managed and/or performed software development, system administration, networking, backup and archiving, web development, project management, budgeting, forecasting, off-shore development, contracting, staff development, training, testing, quality assurance and many other aspects of technology and business. You can avoid making the same mistakes I (and others) have and benefit from my successes by learning about my experiences. Think of me as your virtual mentor.
